Social Anxiety Disorder — What Is It?
Do you have extreme stage fright? Do you have difficulty expressing yourself when in the company of non-relatives or not-so-close acquaintances, unfamiliar people? For all you know, you may be suffering from social anxiety disorder. This disorder, sometimes known also as social phobia, is that state of prolonged social anxiety and worry that causes you great distress and hampers you from functioning properly in some, if not most, areas of your daily life.
People around you may think that you are just shy since you have been this way since you were a kid. Being bashful is the adjective that describes you best. However, there is a line that separates bashfulness from social anxiety disorder.
Are You Just Shy?
For example, if you have the disorder, you may not want to mingle with other people because doing so brings you headaches, nausea or worse will cause you to vomit.
With being shy, you don’t feel like vomiting and dizzy, you are only apprehensive of how you will approach other people. Once you and the persons you are talking too have warmed up to each other, you can converse with them without difficulty. A person with social anxiety can not push himself to socialize. There is no such thing as a warm up period for him.
Symptoms
Clinically, social anxiety disorder is manifested by excessive anxiety and self-consciousness in the most ordinary of everyday, normal situations involving other people. Sometimes, the disorder is limited, as when you are only fearful of speaking or performing in front of an audience, or you would not want to be socializing with others. But in some cases the social phobia is so broad and diverse that the anxiety manifests itself in almost every situation where you are exposed to other people.
Socio-phobics have this irrational fear of being watched, of being judged for their actions, of being evaluated every time by others, whether these others be family, friends, co-workers, or even strangers. The anxiety is so intense that the sociophobic individual can not work or can not study, can not talk, can not interact.
In front of other people, do you sweat profusely? Do you tremble or blush excessively? Do you get goose bumps in the company of a group of people? Do you become panicky when asked to speak in front of others?
Degrees of Social Anxiety
Social anxiety has degrees of disorder. It may be mild or severe. Mild social anxiety can be cured by therapy and simple self-help techniques such as holding a stress ball during a conference or a group meeting.
The severe form of this social anxiety needs medications since most of the times anxiety is accompanied by psychotic symptoms such as hearing things when exposed to the public.
How Do You Address Social Anxiety Disorder?

The pharmacological treatments, some experts contend, may not be enough to totally cure the sufferer of the disorder. Aside from the side effects brought about by the medications, the tendency to relapse after the discontinuance of the drugs is possible.
A deeper need for comprehensive psychotherapy may be in order to ensure prolonged, if not permanent treatment. Take note, however, that the therapy must be supported by the family and close circle of friends; their support and guidance is critical to reinforce the patient’s feeling of self-worth again. What Are Panic Attacks? How Do I Stop Them?
Panic attacks are intense feelings of fear and anxiety that can come on suddenly. They can be associated with one or more physical symptoms, including rapid heart beat, shaking, rapid breathing (shallow breathing), tingling sensations in the arms or face (pins and needles), and feeling dizzy or light-headed, like the world is “closing in on you.”
Many people fear that they will pass out or die during a panic attack, but the attacks are not physically harmful and often fade away within 10-30 minutes.
But even though panic attacks are not considered physically harmful, they are certainly emotionally harmful, often causing a fragile state of mind, wherein the sufferer obsesses over the possibility of another attack occurring. Unfortunately, this obsessive “loop” often leads to more panic attacks, producing a “cycle of panic and anxiety” that can be difficult to break.
There is also much evidence to suggest that the elevated stress levels associated with panic attacks weaken the immune system; so learning to deal with them effectively is in fact a health issue, not just an emotional health issue.
Medication is sometimes used to “cover up” symptoms of panic attacks, but in my experience, there are only two proven methods of stopping them: breathing exercises and cognitive stress reduction techniques (thinking yourself out of a panic attack). A combination of these two often produces the best results.
You can find a lot of information about breathing exercises online, but a good basic technique is to sit quietly and concentrate on slowing your breathing, making sure that you exhale longer than you inhale. This reduces slightly the amount of oxygen you are taking in, and has a calming effect that is noticeable within minutes.
We normally think of more oxygen to our system is good thing, but too much oxygen can lead to hyperventilation, which is known to produce an anxiety. You’ve probably seen the old “breathe into a paper bag” technique. This operates on the same principle: reduce the oxygen intake (slightly) to calm the central nervous system.
Cognitive stress reduction techniques are also effective and can be used in conjunction with breathing exercises to reduce anxiety and panic symptoms. Taking the time to learn a few of these techniques can improve your ability to deal with stress and anxiety and even stop panic attacks from occurring in some cases.
An easy but effective technique is one I call “Questions and Answers.” To begin, be seated comfortably with your eyes closed, and begin mentally asking yourself the following questions:
What does it feel like to be calm and relaxed?
How would it feel right now if I were at peace with myself and the world?
How would it feel to be ________ right now? (Fill in the blank with the name of someone calm, relaxed and in control. It could be a friend, a celebrity or anyone who represents these qualities to you)
Ask the above questions calmly and slowly to yourself, pausing between each question to consider the answer. You can repeat these questions to yourself many times–just remember to ask the questions slowly and pause each time to consider the answer.
Using a cognitive technique like “Questions and Answers,” combined with simple breathing exercises is one of the most effective ways of stopping panic attacks, and preventing them in the future. The more you practice these exercises, the better you will get at it, and the less panic attacks will be a part of your life.

Aromatherapy oils are a way for your brain to react to the smells and when applied to your skin. Each oil has its own purpose and also when mixed with other oils. Oils to use to help calm and relax you are lavender, you can just smell the oil and it is enough for your brain to react to it. Or you can mix with carrier oil like olive or almond and rub some on your temples or just on your body somewhere. You can also use an oil burner and put it in your bedroom or in a room you spend a lot of time.
Other essential oils known to help panic and anxiety attacks are helichrysum, frankincense, and marjoram. Smell each of them, and use what smells best to you, or you could use a combination of your favourite oils mixed in with carrier oil for your skin or put into an oil burner. You could also put a few drops in your bath, layback and listen to some music with a few candles going.
Try all sorts of methods and find what suits you is always the best solution, when we want to cure anxiety attacks, we are all different and we have to feel comfortable about what we are doing. Because the main aim here is for you to feel relaxed. Once you start relaxing you will find you have a lot less stress in your life. A Multidisciplinary Approach to Treating Anxiety
There are many different ways that a person can recover from anxiety, and some of those are promoted heavily at this website: exercise, medication, counseling, support groups, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, to name a few.
But, which is most effective? Exercise, medication, or a combination of both? The most likely answer is a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Exercise, alone, can help one’s condition greatly improve. Medication, alone, can help in the short term, but its effects tend to diminish over the long term, and in some cases, completely disappear altogether. Counseling or support groups can be helpful, but sometimes the progress can be slow and difficult to notice.
Speaking from personal experience, the best way to approach anxiety seems to be to treat it from multiple angles at once. Performing exercise can be very useful, but where does a person go when he or she begins to feel burned out? Exercise is not the cure-all solution. When a person begins to burn out and feel as though he or she is unable to go on, the best thing to have around is another person or persons who can help that person get back on track, emotionally speaking.
For myself, the first thing that went into place was exercise. Exercise, as noted in another article, increases self-confidence, self-esteem, and it burns off much of that anxiety. But, also as noted before, it only works to a certain extent, and sometimes support from another human being provides much greater benefits than exercise could in the same circumstances. Then, sometimes both of these are not enough and more personal attention is needed; specifically, attention from a trained professional counselor. These individuals have the experience and expertise to deal with situations that may baffle others. The duration for which one decides to meet with a counselor is completely up to that person; in most cases, the client and the counselor mutually agree that the client has gained enough skill at managing anxiety that he or she is now able to go on his or her own.
Then comes the oh-so-controversial topic of medication, a subject covered in multiple other articles at this site. What I found that medication did for me was that it was like putting a jet engine on a car. It helped to relax me to the point where my social anxiety was minimized enough such that I could tolerate new and more difficult social experiences. I feel that I could have gained the same skill and relaxation on my own through exercise and consistent exposure to anxiety-provoking situations, but the medication really helped me to calm down, be in new situations, and gain skill at managing anxiety much more quickly than if I had not used it. It is important to note that by no means was the medication a cure for the condition; rather, it simply reduced the symptoms to make certain situations more tolerable.
A multifaceted approach to treating anxiety is certainly the most effective, however, it is not required. It is ultimately up to the individual to decided how he or she would like to treat his or her anxiety. The rule to keep in mind is that the more supports that are kept in place, the more progress the person will be able to make. Progress will also be made in a quicker fashion, which may be desirable because many people have suffered anxiety for many years and are longing for relief.
A person that has just identified him or her self as suffering from an anxiety disorder should engage in regular exercise, counseling, a support group, and probably have a small dose of medication as well. In the beginning is when a person is most vulnerable; therefore it is wisest to have the most supports in place at this time. As one grows in confidence and skill, many of the supports can be dropped. Counseling and support groups have become unnecessary for myself. However, some may choose to stay in support groups to struggle with occasional issues that do arise, and oftentimes, these persons will have expertise which they would like to share with others. Long-term, I plan to go off my medication because I place strong distrust in drugs and drug companies, which put money, not people and their well-being, at the top of their list.
