m to be a lot of people who are suffering from anxiety these days, and with the additional stresses brought into our lives by the poor economic conditions of late, and redundancy worries on top of all those usual concerns about making ends meet and being breadwinners for our children, is it any wonder!

After hearing some stories about a friend who has been experiencing these attacks I decided to compile my list of what I would call common sense tips. I am not medically qualified, so see what you make of them.

My tips to reduce anxiety and panic attacks are:

1.Diet and exercise can by all accounts have a surprisingly large impact on the occurrence, and severity, of panic attacks. So, eat a good healthy balanced diet and don\’t over eat.

2.Don\’t give yourself excessive responsibilities to do things for people and don\’t rush your life too much. Take it easy! Lots of stress is caused by not taking time to do things, and by cramming too much into your days.

3.If you are one of those couples that tend to discuss family and relationship issues while you prepare for bed, you should be aware that this may not be the best time to do this for people who suffer any form of anxiety at night. By discussing worrying circumstances just before sleep your dreams will tend to be accentuated on those difficult aspects of your life, which is unhelpful.

4.Medication can help, but in my view should be a last resort as there are in fact very few, if any medications which don\’t have side effects.

5.Talking to someone who understands, and cares is what we all used to do before the idea of counseling was devised. There is wonderful therapy in talking with someone you know well and who you know will not judge you. Find someone who will offer you support and positive reinforcement and hopefully they will talk with you. You will be surprised how helpful that can be and as a by-product how much closer and more you will learn to like about that other person as the same time!

6.Breathlessness is just about the most common anxiety attack symptom that most experience. Breathing techniques may be helpful during an attack. We have all heard of inhaling slowly into and out of a paper bag. However, my special tip is to combine it with closing your eyes think of it a bit like meditating. It very often helps.

I suppose that I am saying the obvious, and truly it is hard to really take this on-board when you suffer from the sort of anxiety that results in panic attacks, but these attacks (except in rare cases where there could be a biological/physiological reason so do consult a medic) are in fact purely a product of the mind. An attack is the result of a person/\’s imagination of a perceived threat or danger. What is Anxiety? Ever met someone who worries from the time they get up in the morning until the time they go to bed? Ever live with someone who wakes up with a red mark on her toe and is certain she has a disease? Then she gets an advertisement in the mail that day that focuses on how important it is to get regular checkups and she breaks out in hives because she is now certain she is going to die. Then she sees a report on the news that night about a local funeral home and she is now literally shaking because she feels it was meant to be that she saw that and she starts thinking about how her children will live without her. Then the next morning she wakes up … the red mark is gone but now she has a bruise on her left knee… and she starts thinking she has a blood disease?

Ok, we all know someone like that. Maybe it is you. It can be quite funny … especially when it isn’t you… but anxiety is actually is a very serious matter.

It can consume us… it stops us from living in the present… it cheats our spouses and children from getting the emotional support they need and deserve from us. It is what keeps Psychologists and pharmaceutical companies in business.

It is estimated that 13% of people suffer from anxiety. So if you are sitting in a room of 100 people and you are suffering from anxiety, there are about 12 others who are sitting in the room that are feeling just like you.

It is estimated that over 19 million people in the United States have some type of anxiety disorder.

Here are some of the symptoms that can be associated with anxiety: racing heart, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, chest pain, stomachache, feeling dizzy, feeling of faint, numbness and chills.

If you or a loved one is suffering from anxiety, get help. Don’t wait because you are too scared. It is a serious matter. You are not only hurting yourself but you are hurting loved ones, too. So what are your options? If you have good health insurance, you can go to a local Psychologist. Some are helpful and some aren’t.

There are also many anxiety medications available. Unfortunately, with each medication, there are also a bunch of side effects that go along with it. Some of the side effects include: becoming addicted to the medication; risk of suicide; weight gain; blurred vision; headaches; heart palpitations; nightmares and agitation.

Also keep in mind that a lot of times, the medications aren’t even effective.

Another option is to try some type of anxiety program. Check your local newspaper. Often, there are support groups for those suffering from anxiety. There are also some anxiety programs online. Some are good and some aren’t. Make sure you try a program that has worked successfully for others. Talk to those who have been through the program to make sure it is a good one and that it will really help you.

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

“Anxiety disorder” is a term that covers many different types of nervous conditions that cause anxiousness, feelings of fear or other unwanted, counterproductive or irrational feelings. These feelings of anxiety can be due to a particular phobia, to a particular event or happening earlier in life, or may be due to pathological (medical) uneasiness. There may be no warning of the onset of your anxiety disorders. They can be sudden, or develop gradually over many years and such events are likely to cause profound disturbance of the sufferer’s normal daily routine. In the 21st Century, the occurrence of anxiety disorders is assuming alarming proportions. They afflict more than forty million American adults. Many adolescents, and even children, also develop these disorders. Most patients are seriously affected, with the disorder(s) affecting them for several months, or even years. You may suffer frequent bouts of fear, concern, or apprehension of some worrying event.

Why Do People Get Anxiety Disorders?

Many factors may contribute to the occurrence of anxiety disorders. There is not just one cause for all anxiety disorders. They may occur as the result of a combination of many different factors.

Those factors may include:

Childhood events: Disturbing and traumatic events in childhood, such as child abuse, loss of parents, separation from family, accident or illness, can leave a lasting effect on the mind. Even having been bullied, embarrassed, or made fun of at school can produce lasting anxieties that manifest into a serious anxiety disorder later in life.

Genetic: Parents with anxiety disorder can pass it on to, or cause their children to be more likely to suffer from this type of condition, because of genetic factors or the environment that they provide in the family home.

Stress and Trauma: Stressful, traumatic events can contribute to anxiety disorders. Domestic violence, **** (or other forms of sexual molestation), physical assault, death of a family member or loss due to natural disasters like floods or earthquakes, leaves a person feeling helpless. This feeling of powerlessness leads to fear and resultant anxiousness.

Substance abuse: Alcoholism and drug addiction may contribute to anxiety disorders in some people. And, not surprisingly, most alcoholics and drug addicts had some sort of disorder before they became addicted. The addictive substance was a coping mechanism for a time against the anxious, out of control feelings.

Medical ailments: Certain disorders, like eating or sleeping disorders, depression and other nervous ailments, may contribute to more anxiety disorders, and possible medical problems. These disorders do not allow the body to function normally. Without proper sleep or nutrition, anyone is likely to become very anxious.

Personality: Whether a person is born with low self-esteem or develops it in later life, they are likely to become anxious.
