1% of the population has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, however many cases go undetected or get mistreated as depression. My family member displayed some of the classic symptoms associated with the manic side such as inflated self esteem, euphoria, extreme optimism, tendency to be easily distracted, aggressive behavior, agitation, and spending sprees to name a few. Some symptoms linked to the depressive side are fatigue, sadness, hopelessness, sleep problems, anxiety, irritability, and hopelessness. Some people even suffer psychotic episodes, hallucinations, and delusions.
This disorder has been linked to schizophrenia but the causes have yet to be determined. There are three factors experts are researching- biochemical, genes, and environmental factors. If you are a manic depressive you were probably born with the possibility of developing it but something that happened to you set it off. It could have been a traumatic event like the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or even relocating.
People with self esteem issues have been known to develop bipolar symptoms. There are also physical changes in the brain that affects chemicals called neurotransmitters which are tied to mood. Hormonal imbalances may also be the culprit. There has been a link between family members with mental illnesses, but studies have shown that one identical twin could have it and the other doesn’t necessarily have to.

As long as you live, you can be sure that you will have opportunities of sadness and grief. This is part of life and, we have to learn good ways of coping. Sadness and grief can be caused by many things including the following. It might be death of a loved one, loss of a job, break-ups in relationships, divorce, depression, anxiety, poverty and the list goes on and on. The entire list above has the power to leave you frustrated and in many cases overwhelmed. Nobody can claim to fully understand your situation and no one has the cure to sadness and grief. We have to live through it and find our strength the best way we know how. When you are sad, there are things you can do that will make a world of difference and leave you feeling better. Take the following tips to heart and always apply them when you feel like you have hit rock bottom.
• The first thing is do acknowledge what you are feeling. Do not try to hide it or pretend everything is fine. You do not have to shout on roof tops that you are sad but, you should not be in denial. The worse thing you can do when going through grief is to lie to yourself that you are okay when you are dying inside. You are not a bad person for feeling sad. In other words, it is alright for you to feel this way because you are a human being. Do not make apologies for feeling down. With this mindset, you are ready to look into various interventions that will help you overcome.
• Some people stop when they are sad. This can be both helpful and harmful. Many will not eat and will spend the whole day as if in a trance. When dealing with grief, you have to follow your normal routine. You might not feel like doing it but, it is good for you. It will help you escape feelings of self pity. However, do not pretend that you are fine when doing your daily chores. Acknowledge the problem but choose to continue anyway. This is the attitude of an overcomer.
• For people who are sad because they have lost someone, try to think of the good times. They would have wanted you to live your life because they loved you. Instead of perceiving that you have lost someone, know that the place they have departed to is temporary and you will follow them one day. This will bring in a spiritual aspect and with many religions, death is just a passage to a better place. Find spiritual strength and reconnect with the creator. Celebrate life instead of mourning life and you will definitely overcome sadness.
• When you are feeling sad, try to look around. You will discover that there are so many people in your shoes and many in a worse condition than you. Try to reach out and help somebody. Making somebody in distress smile is the most rewarding feeling and you will discover that your grief will fade. In the global economic crisis, many are crying fowl that they have lost their jobs. This is definitely sad but, in sub-Saharan Africa, children are dying in the arms of their parents. Hunger prevails and the worse thing that can happen to a person is to watch their children die one by one and then feel themselves die.
Hunger is preventable and this goes to show you that sadness is more severe in others. Reaching out to help those in need will give you a renewed perspective in life. You will learn that there is no time for sadness when there is so much to do to help others. Dealing with sadness this way will help you appreciate what you have and find opportunity for creating joy in life for others and for yourself.
