Does anyone have experience treating ADHD with natural remedies?
If so, what did you use and was it effective for your child?

When my son was young, ADHD was not as readily diagnosed. I was very lucky that a relative viewed a television show featuring a physician who spoke of food sensitivities. When I understood how to work with this, I was able to get things under better control and also not feel like I was being a bad parent (even though I used consistent discipline). I read books by Dr. Doris Rapp and these helped, greatly. I also see that many others mention fish oils, so that may also be helpful. Try looking the books up, online, through used booksites and you can get them very cheaply. Also, view these Youtube videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRDpcWZUEiU&feature=PlayList&p=FC338CD0041015CA&index=0&playnext=1
Dr. Doris Rapp #2:

You can use the elimination diet to see what your child may be sensitive to. Usually, you should start with removing sugary things, wheat products, and sometimes dairy. If a child has temper flare-ups, peanut products can be very problematic, even things cooked in peanut oils, like certain chips.

Also look up: ADHD and food sensitivities, ADHD and leaky gut, ADHD and Candida.

Try to find positive things to say to your child when they do something they should, or even try when it may not have been that easy for them. Accomplishments may be small, but they are still important.
References :
If your child is really out of control at any moment at home, you can put him/her in a bath with Epsom salts (Magnesium sulfate) or Dead Sea Salts (Sodium bromide). Both promote relaxation, and the simple process of taking a bath can be relaxing on its own.

I haven't used it as a method to treat ADHD (I don't have children), but my massage therapist has, and she found it to be very effective.
References :
Many people will tell you that fish oil is helpful. However, the best thing for ADHD is phosphatidyl serine. This phospholipid has been well studied. Phosphatidyl serine is essential for brain function, it helps block the cortisol response from stress, it helps with anxiety disorder and depression, and it is fabulous for ADHD. Kal makes a straight P.S. formula. Some children's formulas will include P. S. in with fish oils and the like. Because of my knowledge in the industry, I have never been a fan of giving children fish oil. http://www.vitaminlife.com/product-exec/PNAME/Phosphatidylserine_100mg/product_id/40575

I have a doctorate degree in Natural Health, and I owned a health food store. I have years of time behind me as a natural health consultant.
References :
I have a doctorate degree in Natural Health, and I owned a health food store.
Yes! Vaxa, Attend. Really works. Great for focus, and attention. They also have a myriad of other pharmeceutical grade products to support many common illnesses.

I can not answer your question directly, but I would like to offer some resources that you may find helpful.

Speaking in general terms it could be any number of problems.

Lack of sleep?
Too much sugar and/or caffeine?
Not enough fruits and vegetables?
Enough exercise during the day?
All of the above?

You are probably already aware that many prescribed drugs have side effects that range from mild to severe. In the case of better nutrition and vitamin supplements (custom tailored for kids) you face little chance of side effects.
References :
http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v04n15.shtml

There have actually been a lot of studies that have shown that Fish Oil can help with ADD/ADHD. It seems too simple, and that may be one reason it wasn't really looked at closely for this, but I wasn't surprised it would help when I thought about it. The EPA and DHA in Fish Oil help with all sorts of things including heart health, skin health, and brain health.
Give it a try... it's economical, safe, and easy. Just make sure that the company you get it from uses Molecular Distillation because that's currently the only safe way to remove any trace contaminants of any heavy metals. Of course, if you aren't sure about the dosage or the benefits, you may want to consult with a holistic doctor, as they may have other additional options available to them.
References :
Personal research in my role as a Product Specialist for a vitamin company
