Understanding the Therapy for Panic Attacks
Panic attacks are remarkable and intriguing disorders. As the word suggests, panic attacks are characterized by a feeling of a hyped up or panicked person. Usually, a person having panic attacks experience fast heartbeat, nausea, headache, dizziness, vomiting, chest pain, profuse sweating, and an inexplicable sense of impending doom or death. There are usually no triggers for a panic attack. They come unexpectedly with no initial signs and reach the height of these symptoms in just minutes. A panic attack has very outstanding characteristics and is always fearful to the person experiencing the attack or to anyone who witnesses this. Nobody likes to experience one and so many are interested in therapy for panic attacks.
Panic Attack Therapies
Therapy for panic attacks can be in various forms. It can be done as a single therapy or as a combination.
1. Breathing into a paper bag – This is one of the earliest treatments for panic attacks. When a person experiences a panic attack, he is made to breathe into a paper bag. This treatment is still unsupported by further research. Many people are now debating on this treatment because doing so would increase carbon dioxide and decrease oxygen level in the body. This is not the natural equilibrium that the body maintains.
2. Cognitive Behavior Therapy – Another form of therapy for panic attacks is cognitive behavior therapy. This is a form of psychotherapy wherein the person is trained to modify his thoughts to be able to handle panic or anxiety attacks. In cognitive behavior therapy, a person is trained how to recognize the trigger or stimulus for an attack.
Most, if not all, panic attacks have an unknown trigger. In this case, a person is trained how to recognize the precipitating factors or the instances that predisposes a person to a panic attack. A person is also trained how to handle the negative thoughts accompanying the attack. A person is also taught coping techniques like breathing exercises and thought blocking which they can use when an attack happens.
3. Medications – Various medications are used in the treatments. These drugs include tranquilizers and antidepressants. Adherence to the medication regimen is associated to the decrease in the incidence and severity of panic attacks.
The therapy for panic attacks is more likely to be effective when followed correctly and done faithfully.
