I Am Struck Numb

The scene continued to haunt me for days. Though we were immediately given shelter in make-shift houses outside the town, it could not lift the veil of fear from our minds. It took several days for everything to return to normal. The houses were rebuilt and we could return to our houses, but it was a long wait for us. All our belongings were gone and we had to start afresh. There was government aid for us but nothing could lessen the trauma for us.

I was struck numb by all this. I continued to get visions of the earthquake and the widespread devastation after that. The trauma of seeing my whole assimilated life go down in shambles was a great torture for me. It was difficult to rebuild our lives and get back into gear. Waiting in the wings for my entry into the play, I could hear my heart throbbing madly inside my chest. I could feel the bile rising in my throat. There was distinctly an anxiety attack on the way.
