1.    Learn How to Meditate: Never underestimate the power of relaxation, and this is a perfect example. If you can learn to embrace the power of meditation and figure out how to tune out the outside world and focus instead on your breathing and relaxation, you will be in control of your mental health. This is a first and very important step to good strong mental health.

2.    Stay Organized: Many people get stressed out or feel overwhelmed because they don’t have the necessary tools and techniques in place to stay organized. If you can learn to stay ahead of your tasks and manage potential stress in this manner, you will maintain the picture of good mental health.

3.    Talk It Out: Having the ability to communicate effectively is an excellent way to be in control of your mental health. Not only being able to constructively talk through your problems, but also talking to those close to you when you need a lift can do wonders for your mental state. Talk it out when all else fails because sometimes communication is the key to overall happiness.

4.    Volunteer Your Time: There is something truly to be said about giving back to your community in some capacity. Giving to others can make you feel good and can in turn make you feel mentally stronger. Therefore find opportunities to get involved through a church, a shelter, or any other community body that requires help in some capacity. This can help you to do something productive with your time and ultimately help you to feel better all around.

5.    Burn Some Calories: The last thing you may feel like doing when you’re down and out is to jump on a treadmill, but exercise is good for your mental health as well as your physical well being. Not only do you gain energy, but you also release endorphins which will help you to feel good. You will leave your workout feeling stronger and happier, as you’ve had a chance to clear your head.

6.    Treat Yourself: Avoid the common objection that you don’t have time or money, and find a way to treat yourself to something truly special. It can be something as simple as a bath or something like a day at the spa. It matters not what you do, so long as it’s special and valuable to you. Take some time out of your busy schedule and treat yourself, you’ll be amazed at how good it makes you feel.

7.    Write It Down: There is great power in writing down your thoughts. Keeping a journal of the ups and downs can be an excellent outlet, and can contribute to strong mental health. If you write it down, sometimes it serves as a way of getting it out and it’s your own private escape.

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to work on your mental health. These easy and effective methods can allow you to gain strong mental health, but don’t have to cost you much financially or otherwise. Try them out and see just how much better you feel!

It all started when scientists from Zurich University found that people who inhaled the hormone called oxytocin continued to trust strangers even after they were cheated on. That discovery, they say, could lead to future treatments for social phobia.  It didn’t take long for a long-sales-letter type websites to appear selling the new wonder drug:

oxytocin.

It has been called “the love hormone“, “the cuddle chemical”, “the mind reading hormone” and “the trust drug”.

And for a reason.

It’s the chemical that makes you feel what you’re feeling during an ******. It is also produced during labor and it’s responsible for the unique and unbreakable mother-child bond. When your brain is releasing oxytocin, you feel loved, relaxed and more open to trust – not only friends and lovers, but also strangers.

The Zurich University’s study has found that oxytocin has a very specific effect in social situations: it seems to diminish fears. Lead researcher Dr Thomas Baumgartner thinks that a lack of oxytocin is at least one of the causes for the fear experienced by social phobics.

Brain scans show that oxytocin can lower activity in the amygdala – a region of brain that is responsible for feelings of fear and apprehension – and which is overactive in social phobics.  So, yes – it’s true: a sniff of oxytocin could improve readiness to engage in social interactions for people who suffer from social anxiety disorder by simply making them less fearful.

Then again, there are other things you can sniff to increase your confidence in social situations… Lots and lots of people who don’t have social phobia consume alcohol for the same reason.

The problem is, such substances are indiscriminate in their effects: uncritical trust can be just as damaging as irrational avoidance.

What are panic attacks?

While you’re anxious you feel awful feelings and strain. Additionally you could as well have one or more unpleasant physical symptoms. For example. a fast heart rate, trembling, feeling sick, agitating (shudder), perspiring, dry mouth, chest pain, headaches, a ‘knot in the stomach’, fast catching one’s breath. These are some of the symptoms but not all.

Some but not all the symptoms can include the following:

* Hammering Heart / High Heart Rate

* Sweating / Sweaty Palms

* Shaking

* Feelings of breathlessness

* Dry throat

* Chest pain or tight chest

* Nausea or abdominal distress or churning stomach

* Feeling giddy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint

* Feelings of unreality or being isolated from oneself

* Fear of losing control or becoming brainsick

* Fear of death

* Numbness or tingling sensations

* Chills or hot flushes

The grounds why everything seems to break down when you are attempting to cure panic attacks are because there are a handful of deep-seated feelings you have about your problems that are merely plain assumed.

These beliefs are so potent that they preclude any advancement being made, even when you’re executing everything else correctly.

These belief are not always accurate because when most anxiety suffers are asked then tell you that if they new the correct way to think and control there anxiety they would not have suffered so much.

When I was addicted to anxiety I had most of the aforementioned symptoms and I was addicted to the way anxiety and panic attacks made me feel, I could not believe this when someone qualified assured me, but as I learnt more about dependences / addictions it came apparent that all I was doing was just following and becoming addicted to the same habits. Now that I am cured from my panic attacks and anxiety disorders this looking backward this was all a bit of a shock.

Before fixing myself I was addicted to constantly checking myself, this means checking if I had anything on my face or shirt. This is what anxiety sufferers tend to do most days, especially out in public. Also I would perpetually ascertaining your pulse rate, your heart rate, feeling for lumps and bumps, and so forth. And perpetually inquiring myself if I was feeling apprehensive, or feeling close to a panic attack.

I was dependant on all that stuff – addicted and it became an uncontrolled bad habit.

When I recognised this, I began reading articles/books, basically anything I could get my hands on regarding subject’s dependency / bad habits. After a enough reading I arrived at some unbelievable discoveries. The more I understand about dependency, the further I actualised it was a problem I was having.

Anti-anxiety Medication For Children – 2 Facts Caregivers Must Know

Unfortunately, children also suffer from anxiety disorders. Unlike adults, the treatment options available for children suffering from anxiety disorders are very limited. This is especially true in case of anti-anxiety medication.

Somehow, anti-anxiety medication is not compatible with children. The same medication that is successfully used to treat anxiety disorders in adults is not precribed for children suffering from the same problems.

1. Prescribed Only if Necessary

The National Institue of Mental Health has cautioned physicians to exercise great care in prescribing anti-anxiety medication for children. As far as possible, other types of therapy should be tried, and usually, doctors prescribe such safer theraphies instead of anti-anxiety medication for children. If medication is absolutely necessary, the doctor is required to carefully weigh the pros and cons of the treatment.

It should be borne in mind that children don’t respond to anti-anxiety medication as well as adults. This is because the bodies of young children are contantly growing and developing and, therefore, react in different ways to medication.

Even in cases where medication is prescribed for children, the dosage will be different. If addictive drugs are prescribed, doctors usually monitor the young patient carefully for as long as he or she is under medication. Usually, doctors urge younger patients to take other types of therapy, such as psychotherapy, which is much more safer.

Although most doctors prefer to treat young children suffering from anxiety disorders without medication, intense cases might require medication. In such cases, medication that has been successful used to treat anxiety disorders in children is available.

In case a child is not compatible with any of the medication commonly prescribed for adults, doctors could prescribe drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs.

2. Commonly Prescribed Drugs

In cases where drugs have to prescribed for a child, the National Institute of Mental Health has recommended the use of the following drugs that have proved to be very effective as anti-anxiety medication for children.

Anafranil is used in cases of children aged ten and above to treat obsessive compulsive disorder.

Luvox, an SSRI, is used in treating obsessive compulsive disorder in cases of children aged eight and above.

Tofranil is used for six-year-olds, usually for the problem of bed wetting.

Zoloft, an SSRI, has been successfully used in cases of children aged six and above to treat obsessive compulsive disorder.

If a child does not respond favorably to anti-anxiety medication, doctors will have to design the best blend of medication that will be of help to the child. In many cases, medication is used only to provide relief from symptoms and to help the child tackle his or her problems by taking some other form of therapy.

For those that don’t know panic attacks can be triggered at any moment without any warning. There are 2 types of stimuli that usually trigger an anxiety attack: External and Internal.

Internal stimuli include any sensation/feeling/thought that your body or brain perceives:

* bodily sensations such racing heartbeats

* thoughts

* memories

* intense emotions

External stimuli include anything in the environment that the senses can perceive:

* changing temperature in the room

* sudden changes in the light’s intensity

* loud voices/sounds or simply the change in the sound’s intensity

* weird taste in the mouth

* fast moving objects (a speedy car, someone running fast by)

* smell

Patients suffering panic attacks aren’t usually aware of these triggers that it would seem hard for them to believe they are triggering the anxiety attacks. It requires a bit of understanding of why these external and internal stimuli do trigger panic attacks.

It’s simply the nature of the human being. Some people inherit a high sensitive nervous system and all of these external and internal stimuli are added up to the permanent tension that an anxiety patient experiences throughout the day. The Oprah Panic Attack Show

On a special Oprah panic attack show, Jonathan and Jordan Knight were featured. They gained fame in the late 80s and early 90s in their band called New Kids On The Block (NKOTB).

What the screaming girls probably didn’t know was that the brothers in the band had demons they had to deal with. The point is, panic attacks and anxiety disorders can happen to anyone.

People need to understand this. Not the ones who are suffering, but the ones who think it’s a fake illness or who think it’s brought on by the sufferer. This is not an act. Nobody wants to be like this.

A Panic Attack On The Oprah Show

Jonathan Knight actually had a panic attack on the show. After he left NKOTB, he hid himself away and didn’t want to get out of bed. He probably had depression, which is linked to panic.

His brother Jordan also had anxiety issues. Jordan started getting books and read up on his condition. He did the right thing. By educating yourself on your condition, it plays a big part in the recovery process.

Jordan eventually found out that his father also suffered from panic attacks. There is certainly evidence to suggest that anxiety disorders can run in families and passed on.

Panic Attacks Affect Women More Than Men

Panic attacks and panic disorder with agoraphobia tend to hit women more. Women suffer from this twice as much as men, but it can be harder for a man to have this and be accepted.
