Overcoming Your Anxieties Takes Practice
Like everything in life, managing your fears and anxieties takes practice. The more you do it, the better you will become. Here are a few reminders on how you can become better at dealing with your fears, depression, and anxieties.
In every anxiety-related situation you experience, begin to learn what works, what does not work, and what you need to improve on in managing your fears and anxieties. For instance, you have a lot of anxiety and you decide to take a walk to help you feel better. The next time you feel anxious you can remind yourself that you got through it the last time by taking a walk. This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety the next time around.
Challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking. When encountering thoughts that make your fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense. For example, you are afraid that if you do not get that job promotion then you will be stuck at your job forever. This depresses you, however your thinking in this situation is unrealistic. The fact of the matter is that there all are kinds of jobs available and just because you do not get this job promotion does not mean that you will never get one. In addition, people change jobs all the time, and you always have that option of going elsewhere if you are unhappy at your present location. Changing your thinking can help you manage your fears.
Sometimes, we may be nervous doing a certain task that may be scary. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you and your team have to play in the championship hockey game in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that your playing in front of a large audience. By playing the game in your mind, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation.
When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety, divide the task into a series of smaller steps and then complete each of the smaller tasks one at a time. Completing these smaller tasks will make the stress more manageable and increases your chances of success.
Take advantage of the help that is available around you. If possible, talk to a professional who can help you manage your fears and anxieties. They will be able to provide you with additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with their problems in the future. Managing your fears and anxieties takes practice. The more you practice, the better you will become.
Remember that sometimes our worrying and fears can make the problem even worse. Take things in stride and try not focus too much on the problem. Patience, persistence, education, and being committed in trying to solve your problem will go along way in fixing your problems. In time, you will find the ways to overcome your phobias.

yes, all practices involving meditation and energy work: vedic, buddhist, taoist, shinto, and, of course *esoteric* judaism, christianity, and islam, and all the (esoteric) others work very well. what doesn’t seem to help much are popular religion, especially of the fundamentalist variety. happy solstice

This is why I read the Dalai Lama’s book The art of Happiness as well as other books. It really answers lifes questions for me. I try to not judge people as much and not get mad at them for doing stupid stuff. It has helped me in my life a LOT. If more people practiced this there would not be wars and greed and power trips. Buddhism really is an enlightened religion. Most religions have a good idea, but it gets convoluted by negative and small minded people who use it for their own personal reasons. Peace!

How do you Cultivate Loving-kindness in your life ?
The Cultivation of Loving-Kindness.
Metta is characterized as Amity (friendship), goodwill, and Loving-Kindness! These are only a few words to describe this mental state.
There is No better way to know it than to study it, and then practice it. Metta is a totally unselfish and a pure state of mind which brings much profit to oneself and to others. The cultivation in this state of mind is called Meditation. When we cultivate Loving-kindness it becomes strong, powerful, and quite useful! It brings us abundant, deep and intense peace and happiness! It eradicates the anxious thoughts and as a result provides clarity in thinking, increases awareness, increases cognitive thinking, improves memory and concentration and focus, and helps one perceive and see things in the present moment as they truly are(& for most people this is the only time in which they are really alive)
The meditative practice of Metta is also a very effective means to overcome anger and to build up the virtue of patience, compassion and altruistic joy. It is also the means for healthy relationships and provides the means for family happiness and peaceful societies.
Beginning Practice for Loving-Kindness.
This can be practiced sitting with a erect posture, or lying down (if you are not sleeping at the time). Many people think giving Metta to oneself is selfish, but it is not ! They think that it is selfish because they misunderstand what is really being done and the mental state involved. Actually it is a sincere and an unselfish ambition to progress onwards in the path toward happiness with oneself and with others. “The one practicing Loving-kindness Meditation recites not just the words in the mind, but sincerely makes it a high priority and ambition to fully understand the complete meaning of Metta, thus enabling oneself to live a life of loving-kindness toward oneself and others. It involves patience and empathy, and selflessness in thought, word, and deed, first toward oneself and then toward others !
Arousing Metta from within yourself. The first-fruits of Metta is loving oneself through self-acceptance and non-judging. This will enable you to see your true virtues and good qualities: such as mercy, compassion, patience, goodwill, empathy, understanding, self-confidence and intelligence – to name a few.
The near cause of Metta is the lovable person or being. Therefore we have to see the favourable aspect of the person or the being. When Metta arises from within you it must be sincere and come from the depth of one’s heart(mind/thought-life/emotions). It should be encouraged to flow abundantly and freely without inhibition. There is nothing wrong with giving Metta = the non-critical, non-judging, acceptance, tolerance, and LovingKindness to others, only “it is to be given in wisdom and guarded against attachment.” When Metta arises from within, one enables and urges it on with the use of four aspirations/mental affirmations: 1) May he or she be free from enmity and danger. This refers to enmity within/negative Kammic/reaping what has been sown; also catastrophies and accidents. Loving-kindness meditative aspiration might be, “May he or she have, receive much Loving-kindness, goodwill and may he or she be safe.” (2) May he or she be free from mental suffering. Mental suffering refers to mental anguish, frustrations, irritations, impatience, despair, worries & anxieties, depressions, fears, phobias & all mental/emotional disorders, and all that is present to no end, as well as the unsatisfactoriness of conditioned existence. “May he or she have peace and maintain a healthy attitude.” (3) May he or she be free from physical suffering. Physical suffering includes all forms of physical discomfort, ill-nesses, disease{dis-ease, as well], all ailments, and all incompleteness. A good aspiration during lovingkindness meditation might be “May he or she be healthy and strong” (4) May he or she take care of himself or herself happily. This means that we desire him or her to be able to carry out all the activities in his or her life and maintenance of life such as waking up, eating, caring for his or her livelihood, caring for the children, spouse, house, work, peacefully – without stress and worries, and sleeping peacefully as well. During Metta Meditation you might say in your mind, “May he or she not experience anxieties and obstacles while taking care of him or herself, family, and while at work.” The principle is that we make each aspiration we do so “With Metta (lovingkindness, friendliness, and goodwill)!!” This will arouse more Metta to arise from within us, in order to work through us toward ourselves and others in life !!
Too many positive aspirations/mental affirmations for the beginner during loving-kindness Meditation might not bring rise to increased Cognitive Thinking, and Concentration, so keep it simple (four aspirations/mental affirmations is good to start with). The goal is bringing goodwill toward others, everything else, the benefits that arise from this process, such as bringing forth patience, helping us to live a life of Metta(lovingkindnes, forgiveness, goodwill, tolerance), increased cognitive thinking, peace, etc. are all secondary, but will come about as one practices Loving-Kindness Meditation daily.
