We have all experienced the uneasy feeling of rising panic as we sit on our desk just before an exam. Perhaps at one point in our school life, we have experienced this common problem called test anxiety. As the term implies, test anxiety is felt before, after or during a school assessment. The prevalence of test anxiety among students is alarming that is why we must know methods of overcoming test anxiety. This phenomenon is frequently observed to cause various problems in a student’s school performance. Undeniably, this is a hindrance to school success of a student. You may not know it but you may be a part of these students that suffer from this type of anxiety. The next time that you are about to take a test, check yourself for some common symptoms:

Common symptoms of a person experiencing test anxiety:

  1. Physical discomforts like nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, profuse sweating and accelerated heart beat.
  2. Mannerisms like tapping the desk, biting fingernails or pacing around.
  3. Uncontrollable thoughts of doing poorly on the test or feelings of impending failure
  4. Disturbance with performance like an inability to think clearly.

Recognizing these symptoms is the fist step in dealing with test anxiety.

How can you prevent test anxiety and what can you do if it occurs

Overcoming test anxiety is not easy but it is still possible. This type of anxiety usually occurs during before or during an assessment exam of school-associated performance. In dealing with test anxiety, here are some of the things that you can do before, during and after the exam.

  1. Before the test – Prepare for it. Many people fear tests when they have not adequately prepared for it. Practice as much as possible. If you are worried about a school dance, practice a lot beforehand to lessen your worries.
  2. During the test – Know useful relaxation techniques like breathing exercises or thinking of positive thoughts.
  3. After the test – Quit worrying about what happened. As long as you did your best, the results will be favorable. After all, school assessments are not a measure of your worth as a person.
