Symptoms of Depression – 3 Things to Look for Before you See your Doctor
Depression has become recognized as a potentially dangerous disease by doctors in the past several years. Unfortunately, it hasn’t always been this way. People used to be labeled as hypocondriacs, whiners, lazy, ect. You get the picture.
However, there are now many famous people that have come forward and shared their disability with others. People like former NFL and Hall of Fame Quarterback, Terry Bradshaw, Actress Linda Hamilton, of ” The Terminator” and “Beauty and the Beast” fame, came forward a few years back and stated that she too suffered from depression.
The average person could have depressive symptoms and not be aware that they could have a very real problem. Many people are in denial that they could have anything like that happen to them. Some of us tend to have a “super hero” mentallity, where admitting that we could have a problem such as depression might make us (God forbid!) human.
Here are three signs that you could be suffering from symptoms of depression.
#1. You feel crummy, don’t know why, and it lasts at least two weeks.
I’m talking about lack of energy, sadness, possible crying episodes, ect. You’ve either never, felt this way or at least not for this long. You could be moody, have a lack of enthusiasm, loss of interest in things that you normally like to do, ect. Maybe your wife, kids, co-workers, relatives or friends notice that something is wrong with you. You could also have a loss of sex drive.
#2. You have thoughts of hurting yourself or others.
This is pretty self explanetory. If you feel that you’re a “normal” guy or gal and you are all of the sudden having feelings of harming yourself or others, then it’s time to seek professional help.
This is potentially a symptom of what’s know as Bipolar Disorder or more commonly known as Manic Depression. Many manic depressives will resort to self mutilation as a way of crying for help. Razor cuts on the arms are quite common. I know that this doesn’t paint a pretty picture. As I stated before, depression is a potentially serious disease.
If you or anyone you know suffers from symptoms like this, please seek medical help right away.
#3. You want to isolate yourself from others.
Everyone needs privacy at times, but I’m talking about when you just don’t want to be around others for any length of time. Perhaps you’re having symptoms of anxiety, such as heart racing, chest pains, sweaty palms, rapid breathing, ect.
Anxiety and depression can go hand in hand. There are many individuals taking medication for both symptoms at the same time.
Summary
Depression is nothing that you have to be ashamed of. It’s quite common and there’s a very good chance that your doctor can prescribe some form of medication that can help to curb your depression and/or anxiety symptoms.
So if you’ve been feeling down for more that two weeks, get yourself in to see your doctor and get yourself back on track!

You should not do the suggesting. You need to discuss this with your doctor who should refer you for counseling and possibly medication. remember the meds are not cures but tools which work best with counseling.

dONT SUGGEST NOTHING

I know that the informational nature of the internet has made things like self-diagnosis and treatment very popular, but your doctor is trained to help suggest the best kind of medication for your situation. If you don’t trust him/her to do that, ask for a referral to a mental health professional. It may be that medication isn’t what will help you the most, but behavior therapy or visualization techniques.
Good luck.

your doctor isn’t going to give you adderal, that is a controlled substance and is used for ADD or ADHD, not something you have if you suffer with depression.
What you should consider doing is seeing a psychiatrist, a doctor specially trained in mental health issues. He can evaluate your symptoms, diagnose your issue and recommend appropriate treatment based on your history and your desire to lose weight.

Ditto the notion that it is the Doctor’s job to make suggestions to you, not the other way around. Also ditto the no Adderal. You don’t have ADD or ADHD.
Seems to me that your first effort ought to be a Nutritionist and then counseling.

I could go out if I wanted. I just don’t want to.
if you have depression /anxiety the doctor will probably not prescribe adderall
for depression probably an ssri like zoloft or lexapro
for anxiety probably xanax valium or buspar
adderall is for a.d.h.d. and NOT for weight loss even though that is one of the side effects. the doctor will tell you to work out before he prescribes an ampethemine for weight loss and with your history of panic atttacks will probably not prescribe it since it is a stimulant
and with your depression may not prescibe it if he thinks you may have a dependancy problem with it

Your doctor should tell you what is right for you!
Please take this into consideration. It worked for me, although I am not you.
I had overwhelming anxiety. It turned out to be my use of Splenda. Yup Splenda. How could something that taste so good, be so bad?
I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff. Sadly, the package doesn’t have to say Splenda or diet to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels. So, you might be using it and don’t even know it!
Sucralose is poison. It ruined five years of my life. I had a laundry list of medical problems while taking it, including overwhelming anxiety, depression, mood swings, insomnia, gastrointestinal issues and more.
Go ahead, google: anxiety splenda or anxiety sucralose or insomnia splenda or insomnia sucralose
The slogan, "Made from sugar…" is very misleading. Splenda might be made from sugar, but it is far from sugar. The resulting chemical is an organochloride (chlorocarbon). Organochlorides are typically poisons.
carbon monoxide – made from oxygen so its like a breath of fresh air

My source is me. I have personally experienced the effects of sucralose and can report first hand of its dangers.

What medication should i suggest to my doctor to treat depression and social/general anxiety?
Ever since I was little I have been really shy and generally frightened by being in unfamiliar social situations. This is something that has gotten gradually worse over time and I think it has contributed to my symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Last night I had a really bad panic attack that I am still recovering from. I am scheduled to see my primary care physician today and I am looking for some ideas of what medication I might suggest to him…
I was on celexa 20mg/day last year for only a few months. It pretty much cured my anxiety but my depression remained unchanged and I ended up gaining weight, so I quit taking it and have been unmedicated for the past 6 months or so.
My symptoms have been worst in the past couple years when stress has been high and I have turned to stress-eating which has caused me to gain 50 lbs. From what I have read on these boards, it sounds like Adderall might help with all the symptoms I am having and possibly help me lose weight (which is a huge contributor to my symptoms) as well. I am nervous about taking an amphetamine though, as I have never heard positive things about them before.
Your suggestions are greatly appreciated…
I just don’t trust PCP’s all that much in prescribing medications for mental illness… after all it’s not their specialty and it seems like they just go down a list of SSRI’s as if they’re all the same… hit or miss. Seeing a specialist would be great, but I really need to start something today, as I am so on edge I almost can’t stand it.
Tell me what you're thinking...
