Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety attacks are normal reactions to a threatening situation and results from an increase in the amount of adrenaline from the sympathetic nervous system. This increased adrenaline speeds the heart and respiration rate, raises blood pressure, and diverts blood flow to the muscles.

These physical reactions are appropriate for escaping from danger but when they cause anxiety in many situations throughout the day, they may be detrimental to a normal lifestyle. An anxiety disorder is a disorder where feelings of fear, apprehension, or anxiety are disruptive or cause distortions in behavior.

At times, an underlying illness or disease can cause persistent anxiety. Treatment of the illness or disease will stop the anxiety. Anxiety illnesses affect more than 23 million Americans with about 10 million Americans suffering from the most common, general anxiety disorder.

Panic attacks can begin with a feeling of intense terror followed by physical symptoms of anxiety. A panic attack is characterized by unpredictable attacks of severe anxiety with symptoms not related to any particular situation. The person experiencing the attack may not be aware of the cause.

Symptoms include four or more of the following: pounding heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness, chest pain, shaking, sweating, choking, nausea, depersonalization, numbness, fear of dying, flushes, fear of going crazy. Heredity, metabolic factors, hyperventilation, and psychological factors may contribute to anxiety causing panic attacks.

Panic disorder tends to run in families with first degree relatives of patients having four to seven times greater risk than the general population. Hyperventilation (rapid shallow breathing) can cause a decrease in carbon dioxide in the blood. This decrease in carbon dioxide has been associated with anxiety. Anxiety can be caused by psychological factors as well.

One theory is that there is an unconscious conflict between certain wishes and desires, and guilt associated with these desires. Another theory is that certain fearful childhood situations provoke anxiety later. This later theory has been associated with agoraphobia in that the fear of being abandoned in the past may lead to fear of public places.

Panic disorder is treated with drugs, cognitive- behavior therapy and other forms of psychotherapy, and/or a combination of the two. Relaxation therapy is also used in combination with other treatments.

Anxiety disorders oftentimes cannot be linked to specific life events and persist for months if not years at a time. Many people with anxiety disorders can be helped with treatment. Most of the medications which are prescribed are started at low doses and tapered off when treatment is near an end.

Side effects generally become tolerated or diminished with time. Behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy can be effective for treating several of the anxiety disorders. Behavioral therapy focuses on changing specific actions and uses different techniques to alter unwanted behavior.

Techniques include special breathing exercises and exposure therapy – gradually exposing patients to what frightens them and helps them cope with their fears. Cognitive-behavioral therapy teaches patients to react differently to the situations and bodily sensations that trigger panic attacks and other anxiety symptoms. Patients also learn to understand how to change their thoughts so that symptoms are less likely to occur. These techniques are designed to help people confront their fears. Without treatment, anxiety attacks can be extremely disabling and disrupt family, work and social relationships.

An anxiety panic attack is known as a panic attack that is brought on due to unnatural levels of anxiety. This kind of anxiety can be related to just about anything. Anxiety panic attacks are not just limited to big stressful events and occasions. You can have anxiety over someone you love, a event, and we can even have an anxiety panic attack over what clothes to wear. One of the main features of an

anxiety panic attack is the focus of the attack.

During the very first panic attack, the shock of having one can leave a very lasting experience on the person. In fact, it can be so traumatizing that the person will associate the panic attack with the activity or place and start to AVOID that situation. Needless to say, panic attack never does go away and the person continue to re-live the experience again and again.

Panic attack is perhaps one of the most frightening experiences a person can go through. During a panic attack, the body reacts in a way similar to a “fight or flight” response. Your legs may shake as they are prepared for running; your hands may shake as the large muscles of your arms are prepared to fight. Your palms and feet may become sweaty to give you better grip.

The first and most effective method that will help you during panic attacks is to control your breathing. Although it can be difficult at times (with the amount of fearful thoughts flooding you), its still can be done, with some determination on your part. Although you may feel very short of breath during a panic attack, your actually VERY FAR from lack of oxygen. In fact, most sufferers are unaware that they are breathing too much!

Most doctors will readily prescribe SSRIs, benzodiazepines and other medications that make up anxiety attack panic treatment even with side effects and high cost (in the long run) involved for following reasons. Medications appeals to both doctors and patients alike. It does a fine job of suppressing symptoms quickly and many patients are under the impression that the only solution to their problem is medications.

Standardized Herbal Supplements

In line with its natural constituents, the body easily adapts to the active compounds of herbal remedies and therefore promotes healing without ensuing negative physiological consequences. Today, herbalists have come up with standardized herbal supplements for anxiety and panic attacks, such as PureCalm, which have been formulated from the expert combination of lemon balm, lavender, and passion flower extracts, and prepared in a concentrated tincture format to holistically promote the routine functions of a healthy nervous system.

Know that panic attack cannot harm you. Despite all the painful sensation and feeling of death that you have to go through during panic attack, know that they cannot harm you. Eventually, the panic attack will go away and nothing will happen to you – no heart attack, no fainting and no dieing. This is the key to get rid of panic attacks. Know that panic attack cannot harm you, assure yourself that it cannot harm you and you have nothing to fear.

Three Big Benefits of Natural Anxiety Treatment

June 20, 2009 by · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Other Anxiety Related Articles

Anxiety is an completely natural phenomenon, and as long as it only occurs occasionally, it is nothing to really worry about. In fact, it would be both unusual and a bit disconcerting if a person did not experience some anxiety from time to time. But when occasional bouts of anxiety become a more persistent problem that is limiting your life, it is time to take action and work to return to a balanced emotional state.

Chronic anxiety can sometimes be the result of past issues or unresolved conflict from childhood. Other times, it is purely a manifestation of present misfortunes or plain old bad luck. Whatever the reason, the sufferer can benefit from being proactive, and taking a stand to do something about the problem. After all, if you continue to do exactly what you’re doing now, you will continue to get the same results.

Natural anxiety treatments are increasing in popularity every day, and have many advantages over the traditional approach, i.e. trying to treat anxiety as if it were a “disease” or a medical problem (in the overwhelming majority of cases, it’s not).

One example of a natural anxiety treatment would be to use yoga and/or meditation to relax the body and mind. There are also many other relaxation techniques, including controlled breathing exercises, affirmations and positive self-talk. These types of self help tools have several advantages over traditional (medical) approaches to treating anxiety. First, they are empowering to the sufferer, because he/she is taking matters in their own hands, and refusing to give in to a “victim” mindset (very important). Second, natural anxiety treatment options typically are safe and have no side effects or potential withdrawal symptoms.

Medications for anxiety often come with a plethora of unwanted side effects, like weight gain, digestive problems, memory lapses, heart-burn, sexual dysfunction, mental “fuzziness” and many others. Natural anxiety treatments hold little or no risk of side effects, and get right to the source of the problem by helping you to relax more fully and more often, as well as distracting your mind from obsessive worrying.

Finally, natural anxiety treatment has the advantage of being easily accessible and in most cases, much cheaper than either therapy or medicinal alternatives. Practicing controlled breathing, for example, costs you nothing but a little time. The same is true of yoga (though you may also want to take a yoga course) and of course, meditation. Even guided relaxation audio and videos are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the cost of seeing a psychiatrist; and they can be used at YOUR convenience, whenever you like.

For all of these reasons, more and more doctors and mental health professionals are encouraging their patients to use natural anxiety treatments, sometimes in addition to therapy or medical help, but often as an alternative to these treatments. From natural supplements, to relaxation techniques and breathing exercises, every anxiety sufferer has a wide variety of methods available to them. And until you give them a try, you’ll never know how much difference they can potentially make in your life.

Does Kava Kava Cure Anxiety?

Though it may be just perception, stress seems as if it’s becoming more and more prevalent. Stress is certainly a common condition in today’s society, and everyone has experienced what they would describe as stress at some point. Living in modern society requires making frequent adjustments, and there’s also the issue of dealing with the common responsibilities all people have. Sometimes the expectations of life can feel overwhelming, and can extend people beyond a comfortable point. Because the feeling of stress is typically so unpleasant, people tend to react strongly to it. Even more than reacting strongly to stress perhaps is the desire to see stressful feelings go away.

A growing number of people have become committed to using what are thought of as natural treatments for various disorders. Natural in this case is often seen as something that doesn’t originate from a pharmaceutical company, or something that organically appears in nature. Those who advocate using treatments that are sometimes referred to as natural say these sorts of treatments operate more in harmony with the human body than a treatment produced under controlled conditions; additionally, there are those who believe so-called natural treatments generally have minimal toxic effects.

The desire to go natural has also found its way into anxiety treatment. A plant known as Kava Kava is increasingly being sold and used for the treatment of an anxious condition. Kava Kava grows naturally in regions of the South Pacific, and the peoples there have been using Kava Kava for generations. Kava Kava has specifically been used over time as part of religious ceremonies, and as a cure for insomnia and muscle tension. The ingredient used for treatment is found in the root of the Kava Kava plant, and studies have suggested a correlation between this active ingredient and enhanced mood. To be specific, Kava Kava is thought to have an effect on particular brain chemicals and to have a relaxing effect.

Though on its face Kava Kava may sound like an appealing treatment for anxiety, there are reports of Kava Kava usage being linked to severe liver damage. To be fair, there isn’t conclusive evidence that small amounts of Kava Kava will cause liver damage. There are those who claim the liver damage effects sometimes coinciding with Kava Kava usage are actually the effects of other causes, such as alcoholism. Whether there is an actual link or not, the reports of Kava Kava leading to liver damage reminds us that not everything that occurs in nature is good for us. A point that’s worth being aware of is that there are various treatments for anxiety aside from Kava Kava, and many of these treatments have been proven safe and effective.

Anxiety Treatment – How to Control Your Worries

June 17, 2009 by · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Other Anxiety Related Articles

Do you find yourself worrying all of the time? Do friends and family consider you a worrier? Chronic worry is a form of anxiety, and although everybody worries at one time or another, worry can become problematic when it becomes uncontrollable over an extended period of time. If you find that your worrying is interfering with your life, below are some steps to help you to regain control over your worry.

1. Identify your top worries. Common topics of people’s worry are finances, timeliness, and health and well-being.

2. Figure out what you can reasonably do (if anything) to resolve the sources of your worry. For example, if you’re worrying that you might have bounced a check, go balance your checkbook. If you’re worried that you might not finish that English paper in time, make a timeline for yourself and get started immediately. If you’re worried that you’ll be late, promise yourself to leave 10 minutes earlier than usual (and follow through!).

3. Admit that worrying doesn’t solve problems. Once you’ve done what you can to resolve your worries, it is highly likely that you will still have remaining worries. Worry is like using a crutch even though you are strong enough to walk without it. At this point, if you’ve followed instruction #2, there is nothing more that can be done productively. Your job now is to recognize and admit that worrying does NOT solve problems. It does not prevent problems or help you to prepare. That was the purpose of #2! The bottom line is that you need to convince yourself that there is no purpose for worrying. In fact, worrying causes you to feel worse, tiring you out or taking up time that could be spent doing something that is productive.

4. Identify a time and a place where you can engage in scheduled worrying. As most people find it difficult to just stop worrying, it is sometimes comforting to allow yourself some time to worry. The trick is to limit the worry to a specific time frame and specific place. For example, set aside 20 minutes in the morning when you sit on a particular couch to worry. Then, set aside your worries and go about your day. If needed, you could also set aside another 20-minute worry period at the end of the day. As a side note: while it may be tempting, do not choose your bed as a place to worry, as you want to leave your bed as a place for comfort and relaxation.

5. Repeat the above steps every day. Practice will help to make you more efficient in identifying your worries and figuring out how to resolve them. Practice will also make it more likely that you develop skills to control your worry, as you will first learn to move your worry into scheduled periods and then eventually, you may learn how to shorten your worry periods. Ultimately, you should aim to feel satisfied with your resolutions to situations (#2 above) and not feel that you must rely on worrying. Many people often are pleasantly surprised to find that they do not need to worry!

If you are having difficulty following the above steps and continue to feel worried all of the time, you should consider seeking help from a mental health professional or your physician. He/she can help you to take steps to control your worry.

Depression & Anxiety – the Fibromyalgia Connection

June 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Other Anxiety Related Articles

As Fibromyalgia (FM) sufferers we are often made to feel like our pain is “all in your head”, but research has consistently proven that Fibromyalgia is not a form of depression or hypochondria. IT IS REAL!  However, there is a connection between FM and other chronic pain conditions to depression and anxiety.  Treatment is important because both can make FM worse and interfere with symptom management.

There is some debate by medical and mental professionals about what causes what.  The “What came first?  The chicken or the egg” debate translates into “What came first?  The chronic pain or the depression?”  TRUE Fibromyalgia experts, researchers and others know that the chronic pain of FM & overlapping conditions leads to depression and anxiety.

Fibromyalgia is a common condition in which a person suffers from chronic musculoskeletal pain. There are points called tender points, sometimes all over the body, and these tender and painful points are used as part of the diagnosis of FM. Individuals with FM may also be more susceptible to pain in general. Whenever the tender points are simply touched, they can send sharp pain impulses. Many Fibromyalgia sufferers experience pain all over and some experience pain only in specific regions. It can involve the muscles and the joints. Sometimes, there is so much pain that it is hard to pinpoint exactly where the pain originates.  Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by other overlapping conditions such as chronic myofascial pain (CMP), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), restless legs syndrome (RLS), migraine & tension headaches, interstitial cystitis (IC), mitral valve prolapse (MVP), cognitive dysfunction, depression, anxiety and more.  The symptoms of Fibromyalgia, alone, are wide-ranging and debilitating.  Do they really think that depression and anxiety is the CAUSE for ALL of the above?

Depression is a mental illness characterized by feelings of profound sadness and lack of interest in enjoyable activities. It is a constant low mood that interferes with the ability to function and appreciate things in life. It may cause a wide range of symptoms, both physical and emotional. It can last for weeks, months, or years. People with depression rarely recover without treatment and if you have Fibromyalgia, you may have to fight it for the rest of your life.

Anxiety is a normal state of apprehension, tension, and uneasiness in response to a real or perceived threat.  Although anxiety is considered a normal response to temporary periods of stress or uncertain situations, prolonged, intense, periods of anxiety may indicate an anxiety disorder. Other indicators of an anxiety disorder are anxiety that occurs without an external threat and anxiety that impairs daily functioning.

What can cause depression & anxiety?  Stressful life events, chronic stress, low self-esteem, imbalances in brain chemicals and hormones, lack of control over circumstances (helplessness and hopelessness), negative thought patterns and beliefs, chronic pain, chronic physical or mental illness, including thyroid disease & headaches can ALL cause both.  Little or no social  and familial support can be a main factor in depression for FM patients. Family history of depression & anxiety can also be a factor.

Lack of quality sleep is also believed to have an influence on depression.  Since FM & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients tend to have insomnia and/or other sleep disorders, it stands to reason that poor sleep can lead to depression.

There is a wide variety of medications, vitamins, minerals, herbs and therapies that can help ease the impact of pain, anxiety and depression.  With so many out there, you and your doctor may have to go through the process of trial and error to find what works best for you!

Exercise is not only good for FM, it is also highly beneficial for depression and anxiety.  Recent studies suggest exercise can change your brain chemistry. Exercising can boost your level of serotonin, a brain chemical that is effects mood and pain perception. It can also stimulate the production of endorphins, natural painkillers that can give you an overall feeling of well-being.

Exercise is a great for stress, too. It relieves muscle tension and it gets the heart rate up. The combination makes us more relaxed and alert, which helps us deal with our problems in a calmer and more controlled way.

There are several other methods you can use to combat stress, including: meditation, deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, mental imagery relaxation, relaxation to music, biofeedback, counseling – to help you recognize and release stress.

You can learn more about this topic, medications, supplements, alternative therapies and more at my website AND I will be writing more articles – so check back here!

Stress and Anxiety Reduction

If stress and anxiety has a significant influence on your life that you constantly feel anxious, unhappy, depressed or sick then it is time to do something about it. The good news is that recognizing that you have to do something about it is one of the most important battles that you have to win. Most people ignore stress, thinking that it is an acceptable part of life and something that must be endured. Whilst this is true to some extent, there comes a time when too much stress is bad for you. This will be apparent when your mind and body start to tell you these things by getting depressed, anxious or sick. There are various different methods that you can use to reduce stress from your life, but before you rush into anything it makes sense to determine how serious your stress is and how damaging it is to your life.

Good or Bad Stress

A degree of stress and anxiety in one’s life is considered as being normal and even healthy. Stress motivates us to strive for things. As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, so stress can be equated to necessity. If you need to pay off the mortgage then you work harder at your job. You aim to get a promotion so that you will get more pay. You spend your weekends renovating your home to increase the value. All this has the potential to be stressful but it gets you ahead and helps you to grow as a person.

However there is a point at which this stress becomes too much and begins affecting your life and the way you live. It is at this point that intervention is required, as quickly as possible, and treatment should be sort.

Stress And Anxiety Treatment

The best way to reduce stress from your life is to determine what it is that is actually causing you the stress. By determining this, you can then attempt to remove this source of stress and anxiety from your life. This will have a great affect on treating your stress and anxiety and ease any symptoms. If your job is too stressful get a new job.

However if you can’t remove the stress then you need an alternative strategy. You need a release for the stress that is being caused by the other stressful activity. Many people turn to a physical activity, like sport or gym to work out their stress levels. This is a great way to release stress without removing the original cause. It’s a way to manage stress.

Others turn to ways to relax the body. This includes things like yoga, deep breathing and meditation. This helps to bring the body down from an anxious state and refocus energy onto other things.

Others take on a hobby or a pet. Stressful and anxious situations are often situations that you can’t control. This brings on depression and anxiety if it is experienced for too long. A hobby or caring for a pet gives you control over a situation that can never become too stressful. For instance, if you like to paint then you paint. It doesn’t matter how good or bad you are at it because it will not be judged in any way.

Stress and Anxiety reduction comes down to taking control of the situation that is causing you concern. If this is not possible you need a release for this stress and anxiety or an alternative situation where you can have control and the spiritual fulfillment that comes from such a situation.

Social Anxiety Treatment- Options Put Forth

rassing for people now to go public about it. a few of the treatments can be done only if you know something about it.

If you really do not bother about your problem with social anxiety disorders and don’t care about what the rest think, you can opt for a medical professional like a therapist. A therapist will work for your welfare and help you relieve the pressure by not wasting too much time. Yoga or some self medication classes may just help otherwise. It is a pretty wise idea you can opt for. The classes will teach you to manage different situations and unique predicaments you can be subjected to at some point.

But if you happen to be a person who likes to remain mum about such disorders and not discuss with anyone so personally, there are private anxiety treatments for you. In doing it privately, there are a lot of ways you can do it. Herbal medication or adding supplements to your food can be few such methods of treatment. However, it entirely depends on the type of disorder you are suffering from.

It has been found and proved that chewing gum can prevent or minimize anxiety disorders. Many consider chewing gum as a pointless thing to do, but there is a thought to it. A lot of people think it is a great treatment to overcome anxiety as it helps to improve focus and also can relieve stress.

If you are the one searching for a good social anxiety treatment, it is advisable to be clear headed about what you want and how you want it. do not fall into a treatment because it is cheap and easy. You can hire a professional before you even seek some treatment for it.
