My mother was clearly in pain. I could sense the panic inside her. The TV news had just announced that the airplane in which my father was traveling had been hijacked. It was a rude shock for all of us. I could understand how my mother was feeling. The color was almost gone from her face. She was sitting like a statue. I realized that I would have to be the one to handle things immediately. I called the number that was being flashed on the TV. I asked for verification from the passenger list. Much to my consternation, his name was not to be found. I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. At that very moment, my father rang up saying that he had missed the flight. Tears flowed down our cheeks at the thought of the narrow escape. It took a few days more for everything to return to normal. But, my mother was far from normal. She started complaining of nausea and chest pains after that. When a month went by without improvement, we consulted the doctor. The doctor diagnosed it as panic attacks. And it was becoming obvious that coping with panic attacks was surely a tough job.

The House Comes To A Standstill

What happens when the very person in charge of our needs falls sick? Our lives were totally managed by her. She looked after our needs very well. We too were totally dependent on her for our existence. So, when my mother fell sick, our house was in total disarray. I didn’t know what to do. My exams were nearing and I had no time for the house. Yet, I could not turn a blind eye to everything. I tried to remember what my mother used to do, but I was not exactly successful. She had been an excellent manager but a poor teacher.

As far as my mother was concerned, she lived in a world of her own. It was not as if she was always in this condition. She was normal at times and everything was fine. But, suddenly she would recede into a shell and not talk to anyone. I hated to see her in this condition. After a lot of persuasion, I made her tell me what exactly plagued her.

She is Showing Some Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Since that day, my mother was tortured by different kind of anxiety symptoms…

  • Nausea – She felt unstable and wanted to throw up for no obvious reason
  • Chest pains – She experienced shooting pains in her chest as if she was going through a heart attack.
  • Feelings of death – She wished that the floors would open up and she would die.
  • Feelings of going crazy – Not being able to rationalize her feelings, she felt as if she was going mad.
  • Unreal feelings – Everything appeared to be floating around her. Nothing around her registered in her head.
  • Sweating – Perspiration ran down her body as if she had just run a race.
  • Trembling – She shook as if there was a chill in the air. The trembling seemed to linger for a long time.
  • Dizziness – Her mind was clouded over and she felt dizzy. Her legs would not support her. Her head was reeling.
  • Hot and cold flashes – My mother felt the need for cool air. But at the same time, her hands felt clammy too. She shivered for some time and then felt the need for an air-conditioner again.
  • Difficulty in swallowing – It was as if a huge lump had formed in her throat. Swallowing increased the pain even more.

There is no question about her condition being panic attacks…!

A Proper Treatment Followed

I was worried after hearing that these were in fact, symptoms of panic attacks. I could understand the difficulty in coping with panic attacks. The entire family is affected. My mother lost interest in everything. She abhorred going out. The thought of going on our annual holiday seemed to upset her even more. The doctor was however, not very surprised to hear these feelings. It seemed that these feelings were normal for any panic attack patient. He wrote down a list of medicines and suggested certain breathing exercises.

It took a while for the medicines to start working. My mother was able to return to her normal self again. The breathing exercises made her feel better. Our house was returning to normalcy. We were able to be happy again. But still my mother was unable to go out for parties. She felt the same symptoms if we mentioned visiting someone. I thought that it would take more time.

Our Joys are Short Lived

It was six months since my mother took the medicines. She was a lot better and so the psychiatrist suggested taking her off the medicines. She was fine and this good phase continued for about three months more.

I remember it was Thanksgiving day. We had made plans for a family reunion. Everything was perfect. And then it started falling apart. My mother felt the panic attacks returning again. She was caught headlong in it. The guests were due to arrive in the evening and the panic attacks came along in the morning. She vomited and vomited. She could not get out of her bed. We didn’t know what to do. It was too late to cancel the party. Somehow, we managed to go through with it. My mother was however, unable to take part in the celebrations.
