“Relaxation” Your Daily Allowance for Stress Relief

Body : Stress is the curse of living in modern times. Everyone suffers from stress. And the stress we suffer takes a heavy toll on our bodies, emotions and minds.

Feeling stressed out, worn out by fatigue or just simply having a miserable day, the best thing to do is relax.

Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not a recommended method by experts. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, ads, sounds and images. So how do we achieve relaxation? If there are thousands of ways we can get stressed, one of them is not meeting deadlines, there are also many ways we can relax.

In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and irritability is linked to mental stress. Too much stress brings about ischemia that can lead to or cause a heart attack. Relaxation takes on added importance in light of this matter. Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can help you manage stress.

One way of relaxation is transcendental meditation. Recent studies have also shown that this method might reduce artery blockage, which is a major cause for heart attack and stroke. People practice transcendental meditation by repeating uttering soothing sounds while meditating, this is to achieve total relaxation. The researchers found that practitioners of transcendental meditation significantly reduced the thickness of their arterial wall compared with those who didn’t practice transcendental meditation.

Another study on another method of relaxation, acupuncture, seems to reduce high blood pressure by initiating several body functions for the brain to release chemical compounds known as endorphins. Endorphin helps to relax muscles, ease panic, decrease pain, and reduce anxiety.

Yoga is also another method for relaxation and may also have similar effects like acupuncture. In another study, participants were subjected to several minutes of mental stress. Then they were subjected to various relaxation techniques, such as listening to nature sounds or classical music. Only those who did Yoga significantly reduced the time it took for their blood pressures to go back to normal. Yoga is a form of progressive relaxation.

Breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences alamost all aspects of us, it affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, after some time you can feel its effects right away.

There are several breathing techniques that can help you reduce stress.

Another easy way to achieve relaxation is exercise. If you feel irritated a simple half-hour of exercise will often settle things down. Although exercise is a great way to lose weight, it does not show you how to manage stress appropriately. Exercise should also be used in conjunction with other exercise method.

One great way of relaxation is getting a massage. To gain full relaxation, you need to totally surrender to the handling and touch of a professional therapist.

There are several types of massages that also give different levels of relaxation.

Another method of relaxation is Biofeedback. The usual biofeedback-training program includes a 10-hour sessions that is often spaced one week apart.

Hypnosis is one controversial relaxation technique. It is a good alternative for people who think that they have no idea what it feels like to be relaxed. It is also a good alternative for people with stress related health problems.

Drugs are extreme alternatives to relaxation. They are sometimes not safe and are not effective like the other relaxation methods. This method is only used by trained medical professionals on their patients.

These relaxation techniques are just some of the ways you can achieve relaxation. Another reason why we need to relax, aside from lowering blood pressure in people and decreasing the chances of a stroke or a heart attack, is because stress produces hormones that suppress the immune system, relaxation gives the immune system time to recover and in doing so function more efficiently.

Relaxation lowers the activities within the brains’ limbic system; this is the emotional center of our brain.

Furthermore, the brain has a periodic need for a more pronounced activity on the right-hemisphere. Relaxation is one way of achieving this.

Relaxation can really be of good use once a relaxation technique is regularly built into your lifestyle. Choose a technique that you believe you can do regularly.

Coping With The Symptoms Of A Hot Flash

December 5, 2009 by · 5 Comments
Filed under: Symptoms Of Panic Attacks

With any hot flash the symptoms may vary, but they all include one major component – heat. Although no one can pinpoint exactly what causes a hot flash, most agree that a hormonal imbalance makes your body think it is overheating causing your blood vessels to open and pump more blood to cool your body down. This is what actually causes the symptoms of a hot flash.

Some women agree that they can feel the symptoms of a hot flash coming on by having an uneasy feeling, or a feeling of anxiety. The flash is just that, a sudden feeling of intense heat. It will start around your waist area and move up quickly to your upper body and face. You will start to perspire and your face can become quite red and flushed looking. You may start to experience nausea, dizziness, instant headaches, weakness, or even a feeling of suffocation. Unfortunately this is all normal, and it will pass eventually, usually in about 2 to 5 minutes, but it can last as long as 30 minutes.

Symptoms of a hot flash also include rapid heartbeat and the feeling of anxiety. This may make you perspire even more than you usually would because of the overwhelming emotion that it provokes in your brain. The amount of sweat also depends on any medication you may be taking, your diet, and the stage of menopause you are in. Some people barely get a glisten on their upper lip, and others look as if they have run 10 miles. The perspiration will soon cool down. Depending on how much you exuded you will suddenly feel very cold and chilled. The rapid chills will last until you essentially dry your body of any left over perspiration.

Although up to 85% of women have symptoms of hot flashes during perimenopause and menopause, only about 10% to 15% actually have them so badly that they need medication. This isn’t to say that you can’t change the frequency or levels of your symptoms. You can do so easily by changing your diet, eliminating alcohol and tobacco, exercising, and doing breathing and relaxation techniques. This will all help to make it a more tolerable experience and to relieve some of the anxiety you have when suffering the symptoms of hot flashes.

Panic Attacks in Children – 3 Safe Ways You Can Treat Panic Attacks in Children

It is distasteful but true that panic attacks children! It is more agonizing because they are innocent and highly vulnerable. Most parents think that their children are under no pressure of bearing life’s responsibilities, meaning they are kept away from stress and worry. But this is more a misconception than reality, in fact panic attacks actually effect children, but the nature of how they effect and form is a little different.

Before dealing with the safe ways to treat panic attacks in children, let us briefly discuss the term ‘Panic Attack’.

The AACAP (an American research department of children) defines Panic Attack as “recurring periods of discomfort or/and intense fear, besides an amplified heartbeat and longer interval of breath. This period of time is called ‘panic attacks’ and can survive somewhere between a couple of minutes to quite a few hours.”

In order to prevent panic attacks in children you should observe the reasons and influences under which panic actually effects the child. First of all try to work out his/her past happenings and observe their daily behavior. Panic attacks in children can be easily treated by knowing and identifying the root cause. So following, are 3 safe ways you can follow to treat panic attacks in children:

1. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in children – The child who feels too much anxiety about upcoming events, family, friends, conversations, or any other event, are commonly influenced by generalized anxiety disorder. Therapy and relaxation techniques are most effective ways to treat children influenced by GAD.

2. Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in children – At the time of separation from parents or loved ones, commonly a child can experience panic. The cause of separation may be studies, i.e. boarding school. Try to make your child understand the reality of life, as well as train them to cope with emotional stresses. This simple and natural method is very effective when panic attacks children.

3. The fear factor of attending school after a long academic holiday – Commonly, a child can panic when school resumes after long school holidays. Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) are useful in treating such panics:

- Positive reinforcement like a reward system for attending school

- Systematic desensitization- A technique used in behavior therapy to treat phobias and other behavior problems involving anxiety can both help to treat panic attacks occurring in this situation.

4. Anxiety and panic usually arises through something happening within the child’s life. Sometimes it may be school and other times it may be a life experience such as a death in the family or parents separation. There are self help guides available online that can help to treat Anxiety and Panic, however severe! This may be an avenue that is worth taking!

If you feel your child is suffering from panic attacks, you should refrain from getting worried; such symptoms are not abnormal and are easily curable. Just follow the above mentioned safeguards and in most of the cases you may find it effective. There are also self-help methods available to treat anxiety and panic attacks in both adults and children and they may also be worth looking into if you feel your child suffers severely.

What to Do When you Feel a Panic Attack Coming Part 1: the Demon Analogy

Notice: The following is presented for informational purposes only. Assessment and treatment should always be directed through one-on-one consultation with a trained professional.

This is one of my favorite questions and obviously one of the most important ones for people who are trying to gain mastery over panic.

There are basically two options for what to do when you feel a panic attack coming on. The first is to use a coping technique. The second is to do an exposure. And yes, I will explain what coping techniques and exposures are! But first, let’s start off with my favorite analogy:

The Demon Analogy

Panic disorder can be thought of as a demon. There are two ways to fight this particular demon. The first way is to use your shield — Using your shield means using medications (such as Xanax), leaving the situation for a while to calm down, using relaxation techniques, and/or talking back to your anxious thoughts to quite them down. In the next part, I will describe these coping techniques in detail including their pros and cons. But apart from your shield, there is also a second way to fight this particular demon – it turns out that every time you face the demon head on, he gets weaker. Each time you challenge him, he gets smaller. That is where exposures come in to play. Exposures involve turning the tables on the demon by jumping him, challenging him, and saying “Bring it on. Is that all you’ve got?”

Initially, most coping techniques alone are actually not strong enough to stop a panic attack . For example, you may try relaxation to stop a panic attack but it’s just not working. The demon is so large, that he just swipes your “shield” aside. However, usually after one to two months of starting to face the demon (i.e. doing exposures), the demon become so small that the shield techniques finally start working! And after several months of exposures, the demon typically becomes so tiny that he stops coming around at all and eventually dies.

These combined tactics of using your shield and periodically facing the demon head on will help you gain mastery over panic once and for all. If you learn these techniques (in a type of therapy known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) it is very likely that you can eventually enjoy going out with your friends, driving your car, flying overseas, and enjoying a sunny day at the beach without having to worry about panic any more.

Anxiety Cures – 4 Ways Out Of Certain Situations!

June 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Anxiety attack can be extremely frightening, be it the first one or an eleventh one, as anyone who has undergone it can vouch for. Firstly, the person thinks he is suffering a heart attack. But when it is diagnosed as anxiety attack, his first thoughts are to look for anxiety cures. Of course, numerous varied anxiety cures or treatments that can help are available. But the cure or the treatment depends mainly on the circumstances which are the primary cause of the anxiety.

Anxiety can stem from various root causes. So finding the right anxiety cure from among the vast variety is a bit tricky. Some people are lucky in that they only suffer a solitary anxiety attack which is never repeated in their life but most others are not so fortunate. They face repeated regular attacks of one of the different anxiety disorders. But once they become determined to seek anxiety cures, these cures are made available for the specific situation at hand. Most important is the root cause of the anxiety. This anxiety disorder may have its root in genetics, trauma or brain chemistry.

It cannot be said that all anxiety cures do not technically fall into the ‘cures’ category, but they definitely help the patients tackle the attacks more easily. The most popular methods of combating anxiety disorders are:

*Medications: There are many medications available at the doctor’s disposal that can relieve the anxiety symptoms. These cures are technically temporary, but they do help to relieve the symptoms to free the patient to tackle the issue basic to the cause of the problem.

*Therapy: This is a very beneficial branch of anxiety cures where the source of anxiety lies in some outside circumstances. Therapy also plays an important role in the treatment of many types of anxiety disorders since it enables the patients to handle the situation themselves and teach them methods of overcoming the attacks.

*Meditation: People with anxiety disorders who follow relaxation techniques of meditation, and learn exercises like deep breathing etc. are often able to curtail the attacks before they worsen. This definitely helps the person to better control his life in spite of attacks, though it cannot be deemed a complete cure.

*Herbal Remedies: Some wonderful herbs are there which lessen the severity of an anxiety attack and what is more important, they are not addictive. Hence many people find them extremely useful but due care needs to be exercised when using these in combination with other cures of anxiety. Herbal remedies may not go along well with other drugs.

Anxiety cures offer a ray of hope for sufferers of anxiety disorders. While the same cures may not be useful for everyone, they are tools which will enable the persons to deal with this particular illness better and help them to lead a normal life without attacks.
