Anxiety disorders seem to be very prevalent in our country. Approximately 40 million Americans are reeling under the impact of anxiety ailments and the importance of right treatment cannot be overstressed. It is extremely difficult for the affected people to get through everyday life in the wake of the symptoms created by these mental disorders. To help them cope up, there are many anxiety medicines that could be used together with other treatment forms.

Anxiety and stress related disorders are usually treated with anxiety medication together with self-help techniques, therapy and support. With the combined treatment, various types of anxiety are controlled and even cured. Serious conditions like post-traumatic stress ailments can also be curtailed with following the proper regimen of anxiety medication.

Anxiety medications can be broadly classified into two types – Antidepressants and Anti-anxiety medications. Both these can strongly curtail and lessen the anxiety symptoms in people.

Antidepressants such as Paxil and Zoloft are prescribed for the long-term management of anxiety related disorders. These drugs are a little slow to work and patients must use them strictly as directed by their doctor and should follow his instructions very carefully. These are extremely beneficial with collateral cognitive and behavioral therapy.

Anti-anxiety medications exhibit a rapid effect on acute symptoms. But they are usually addictive and possess depressant effects on patients. Only short term treatments are recommended with this type of medications where urgent relief from symptoms is necessary for the patients. For lasting and overall treatment, other options are usually followed to relieve symptoms of anxiety over a long period.

Whereas anxiety medications are generally not designed to affect a cure or to put a stop to symptoms of anxiety, they control the symptoms to such an extent that the patients can take the benefit of other therapy forms as well. These other therapy forms for the anxiety disorder patients are Psychological therapy and Self-help.

Psychological therapy as the name suggests, consists of giving the patients cognitive and behavioral therapy tools to overcome their anxiety disorders. With the symptoms controlled with the help of medications, patients can concentrate on working on other long lasting techniques for keeping their anxiety symptoms at bay. More often than not, desensitization, positive thinking and many other techniques assist the patients survive the anxiety-triggering experiences.

Self-help consists of self-hypnosis, meditative therapy and relaxation techniques which assist the patients further to overcome their mental disturbances. It cannot be said that all disorders of anxiety can be cured, but most of them can be controlled with the right therapy.

Anxiety medicines do not offer a cure but they constitute a very important factor of the overall plan of treatment. When it is absolutely necessary to control the symptoms to bring a patient back on track, these medications are indispensable.

Dealing with General Anxiety and Depression

General anxiety and depression very often occur together. Sometimes the anxiety comes alone first and then leads to depression, other times depression leads to anxiety. General anxiety, or “Generalized Anxiety Disorder” as it’s called by the medical community, refers to one particular type of anxiety disorder. The symptoms of GAD are numerous, but one common element is the tendency to get overly worried.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, People who suffer from this are stressed and worried even when there is nothing to realistically worry about. They are usually fatalistic in their outlook on the world, always expecting the worst, “They anticipate disaster and are overly concerned about health issues, money, family problems, or difficulties at work. Sometimes just the thought of getting through the day produces anxiety.”(NIMH).

General anxiety and depression can each greatly limit the lives of both the individual suffering from it and the people around her. When the two occur in combination, it can make it difficult to lead a normal life. It is not uncommon to treat both general anxiety and depression with a combination of medication and therapy. In some cases, generalized anxiety disorders are even treated with antidepressants like SSRI’s, Tricyclics or MAOI’s. All of these antidepressants can be helpful in treating anxiety symptoms, but there are often side effects, and they usually require 4-6 weeks before they fully work.

In addition to anti-depressants, there are specific medicines available to treat anxiety symptoms. These anti-anxiety drugs can often relieve the symptoms of anxiety, but they usually carry a high risk of dependency and many people experience that their tolerance increases with time, and they require higher and higher doses to get the desired calming effect.

In some cases, medication can help stabilize people so they are more receptive to treatment, but they are often not a good long term solution. It is important to know that medication does not cure anxiety or depression, but rather temporarily stabilizes the mood. In addition, studies show that youth and young adults through the age of 24, that are treated with SRI’s, have more suicidal thoughts than people in their age group diagnosed with depression but not treated with SSRI’s.

In addition to medication, the most common form of treatment for both generalized anxiety disorder and depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. This type of psychotherapy focuses on changing the way you think and behave, believing you’re your negative thought patterns and habits are responsible for a lot of anxiety and depression.

As long as the general anxiety and depression is mild to moderate, the person struggling with it can often can function in that he or she can hold a job and perform basic everyday tasks. When the anxiety and depression worsens, basic things like going to work or taking care of one’s grocery shopping can become un- manageable tasks.

Managing general anxiety is not always easy, but there’s a lot you can do to help yourself. You are not a victim, and there is nothing outside of you threatening to harm you. Whether you take care of yourself, or get professional help with your general anxiety and depression, remember that you are the one in control and at the end of the day; you are the one who has to do the work.

The great news for those who suffer from anxiety or panic attacks is that you are not alone and it can always be beaten. For of all what we need to do is establish the symptoms of anxiety panic attack so we can then address possible cures to this.

For most people these attacks start with your heart quickening for no obvious reason. From here the natural mind set is one of fear, which will cause your bodies natural defenses to tighten up so your muscles are stiff and sore. What tends to happen next is that you feel strange to the point that you are light headed or dizzy. By now you are well and truly in the throws of an anxiety panic attack, and you feel powerless to stop it. The unfortunate thing is that this then becomes a vicious circle because the more you fear the worse the symptoms get, so you get fearful even more and so the problem escalate out of control. These anxiety attacks can start at any time and passing people just don’t realise the personal torture you have to endure.

The first step to anxiety panic attack cures is to notice the symptoms and realise that there are million like you. When you are in the middle of such an attack you feel so exposed and alone, but you are not. This is a massive step in the healing process. The next step in curing panic attacks is what we are going to explain below and that is “Knowledge Is Power”. When you get research and see that others have the same problem that you do and have beat them then you will feel an encouraging lift straight away.

Lets now look at steps to help treat anxiety panic attacks to acquire some of that knowledge that will help you understand symptoms more when they happen.

A/ You can never read up on this subject enough. You will always find someone with a mutual experience and you will be encouraged by their findings.

B/ Try and seek out a good therapist. The dizziness, muscle tightness and rapid heart beat will always be foremost in your mind but to tackle the root cause will let the rest look after itself.

C/ Try to keep as active as possible. Join a gym if you can or do some exercises at home. Walk the dog more or play with the kids. This muscle stimulation will release the pheromones that will naturally help you feel better about yourself.

D/ Try not to linger on your anxiety panic attacks to much. It is important to get knowledge and understand what is going on, but there is a fine line to the point of paralysis by analysis. The natural mindset is to dwell on negative things which in turn embed themselves in our minds to the point that your panic attacks could have started from something very small in the beginning.

It is extremely important to remember that you are not alone with these problems and finding anxiety panic attack cures. Once you know you are not isolated and helpless to fight this problem and you have the knowledge to tell yourself why things are happening rather than fear them, your panic attacks will have less fuel to feed on and will make them easier to deal with.

Good luck with your curing process and remember that “Knowledge Is Power”.

Treating Severe Anxiety

When I admitted to myself that I was suffering from the symptoms of anxiety panic attacks and went in to the doctor to seek professional help, I believed that the struggle was almost over. I  believed that the treatment of anxiety would be a simple and straightforward thing. I could go in, get some medicine, and start to get better. Little did I realize that it was not that simple. As a matter of fact, I was not even half way there. There are many treatments for anxiety, and some of them appear to be miracle cures, but the people selling them are pretty deceptive. Anyone who tells you the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder is easy is deceiving you. In fact, it is a difficult, involved process.

The treatment of mood disorders is always difficult. You see, it requires several different stages. If you suffer from severe anxiety as I did, the first stage is to get your symptoms under control. The First stage is all I thought there was to the treatment of anxiety – the administering of medication. Basically, the doctor gave me some sedatives and an antidepressant that would help treat my anxiety. This would somewhat alleviate my symptoms and get me into a space where I could be responsive to therapy. Therapy, however, was much more involved.

I had wanted the treatment of anxiety to end with pills, but I understood why it didn’t. You see, treating anxiety with medication helps you suppress the symptoms, but it does not address the underlying causes. Most anxiety panic disorders stem from some psychological factor. There was something about me that was making me have severe anxiety attacks, and it was important to get to the root of it. In the meantime, the doctor could treat my symptoms so that I could approach the problem rationally, but if treating the outside symptoms was all he did, I would have to be on sedatives forever. Eventually, whatever it was that was causing the anxiety would find another way to rear its ugly head.

Fortunately, the treatment of anxiety didn’t only consist of therapy. There were a lot of other practical steps that I could take to help treat my anxiety, steps that were immediately effective. Through exercise, meditation, and maintaining a healthy social life, I could keep my anxiety at bay on a daily basis. It would still come out periodically, but if I didn’t let myself shut down I could keep the upper hand. I am still undergoing my treatment of anxiety, but it is better than it has been in years.
