Known and Practical Treatments for Panic Disorder

Panic disorders have no clear cause or symptoms and the cause or the trigger of the disorder differs from one person to another. Hence, there is no generic regimen of treatment for panic disorder. However, some methods have been known to work.

Treatment for panic disorder usually involves the methods psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy done together with medications. Aside from these, some people are also resorting to alternative treatments to prevent the adverse effect of anti anxiety medications. Meditations, physical exercise to improve bodily functions and relaxation therapy to improve mind control and disposition are some of the more common alternatives that panic attack patients to prevent such attacks.

Methods in Treating a Panic Disorder

Drugs are still more often prescribed to people as reliable treatments for panic disorder. This is especially true for people who undergo severe attacks that they themselves cannot control anymore. In cases like these, drugs are often the only forms of treatment. This is because the patient does not anymore have any control or awareness of his or her actions; doctors sedate the patient to prevent injuries.

In such an occurrence, the patient’s panic symptoms needs to be lowered down to a more tolerable level before any other form of treatment can be administered. Drug dosage though need to be started from a lower dose going up as the need of the patient dictates as some anti anxiety drugs produce the same anxiety symptoms of panic attacks.

Once the symptoms have been made tolerable though, it is best to have the patient undergo psychotherapy. It is best for preventive and maintenance purposes and in some cases; psychotherapy alone was enough to clear up the disorder.

While many treatments for panic disorder are perceived to be made in medical institutions, many treatments now are being made in alternative therapy clinics. The most notable are the ones that teach meditation and relaxation techniques. These practitioners abhor the use of drugs and are often against giving them as the first form of treatment. Meditation involves deep concentration to purge the mind from all negative impulses and at the same time help control thoughts. Because a patient learns to be in control of his thoughts, relaxation techniques can be considered as far better cure for this disorder. As he rid his system of the disorder, the more control he has on his actions and the better he will be in coping with future panic episodes.
